To describe a collection as "wobbly" may not seem like a compliment, but in the case of Stella McCartney's Fall 2014, it was. A squiggly line weaved its way across the first series of looks, starting in delicate gold embroidery and ending up as 3D cording on an oversize coat with multicolored mini pompoms. It added a touch of whimsy to the series of black double-breasted jackets, quilted coats, and shirt dresses that opened the show. The daywear that followed had a sporty, relaxed, '90s feel, with a motif of tied sleeves around waists and shoulders, on chunky knit dresses with speckled dots, or printed shirt dresses and slouchy trousersuits with sleeve "belts" nipping them in at the waist.
As with so many of the shows we've seen in Paris, coats were key, either slimline with exposed metal zips, or oversize and chunky in heavy textures, in colours like burgundy, black, and forest green. Later came the celeb-friendly cocktail dresses; supershort with curved hemlines and illusion necklines, featuring layers of fine fringing in blues, deep reds, and greens that created curvy patterns around the body.
All the models wore flat shoes with cleated soles (some with star prints), which allowed them to close the show with a dance down the runway. You won't be surprised to hear that leading the charge was a certain Ms. Delevingne!
