Cannes Film Festival 2014: the red carpet jewels on day one are dominated by diamonds

By Claire Roberts in London
The stars usually show an element of restraint with their jewels on day one of the Cannes Film Festival, and yesterday was no different.
But while the front-page-worthy frocks, and corresponding jewels, are clearly being reserved for premieres later in the week, there were still some interesting jewellery choices on the red carpet, even if colourful gemstones were noticeably absent.
All eyes were on Nicole Kidman, whose latest film, 'Grace of Monaco', opened the festival. Her heavily embellished Armani gown was the perfect choice for the leading lady of the day, paired with an equally ornate Harry Winston Caftan diamond bracelet.
I loved actress Laetitia Casta's look, which stood out among a sea of monochrome gowns. Pretty in palest pink Christian Dior Couture, she accessorised with a diamond bracelet from Chaumet's 12 Vendome collection, which draped downwards like an exotic hand jewel.
Chandelier-style earrings were everywhere, from 'Blue is the Warmest Colour' actress Adele Exarchopoulos in stunning 38ct Chopard drop earrings to model Heidi Kloss in the latest addition to Chopard's Green Carpet Collection, sparkling with pear, round and marquise-shaped diamonds.
Chopard chose the first day of the Cannes Film Festival 2014 to reinforce the ethical message it has been sending out over the past year. At the 2013 festival the Swiss jeweller unveiled its first jewels in the Green Carpet Collection, made from Fairmined gold and created in collaboration with Livia Firth, founder of Eco-Age. Ever since, these squeaky-clean jewels have been making regular appearances on high-profile red carpets around the world, with both Heidi Kloss and Caroline Scheufele, co-president of Chopard, both opting to go green on day one of Cannes.
One of the only concessions to colour on the first, diamond-drenched day was Jane Fonda, who wore red from head to toe, including a pair of rubellite drop earrings from Chopard's Temptations Collection.

For the opening ceremony and premiere of 'Grace of Monaco' on the first day of the Cannes Film Festival 2014, Nicole Kidman chose a Harry Winston Caftan diamond bracelet and Winston Cluster Diamond Line earrings to complement her heavily embellished Armani gown.

Earlier in the day, at the 'Grace of Monaco' photo call, Nicole Kidman paired her demure white dress with a Harry Winston Diamond Links bracelet and diamond earrings and a vintage diamond-pavéd Omega "secret watch" dating from 1955.

The vintage Omega "secret watch", dating from 1955, worn by Nicole Kidman on day one of the Cannes Film Festival 2014. Set with brilliant- and baguette-cut diamonds, it is so-called because of the cover that hides the dial.

Fellow 'Grace of Monaco' actress Paz Vega attended the photo call in a chic, cap-sleeved Zuhar Murad dress, accessorised with 'Bouton de Camélia' earrings and a 'Plume' bracelet and rings, all in white gold and diamonds, by Chanel.

The actress Laetitia Casta looked pretty in pink in Christian Dior Couture, worn with a diamond bracelet from Chaumet's 12 Vendome collection.

Audrey Tautou offset her embellished monochrome dress with chic diamond drop earrings by Chaumet.

Jane Fonda ramped up the glamour on the Cannes red carpet in an all-red ensemble, including rubellite drop earrings from Chopard’s Temptations Collection.

Winner of the Trophée Chopard 2014, which honours the talents of a young actor and actress by naming them Best Male and Female Newcomer of the year, is Adele Exarchopoulos, who wore diamond chandelier-style diamond earrings and two diamond rings by Chopard on the Cannes 2014 red carpet on day one of the festival.

It was the turn of Caroline Scheufele, co-president of Chopard, to go green on the red carpet in Chopard Green Carpet Collection earrings made from Fairmined gold, together with a diamond cuff bracelet and ring.

Model Karlie Kloss chose to wear the latest creation from Chopard’s Green Carpet Collection: a pair of pear, round and marquise-shaped white diamond drop earrings.

Monochrome dresses dominated the red carpet on day one of the Cannes Film Festival. Model Kendall Jenner paired hers with marquise-cut white diamond cluster earrings, a white diamond cuff and diamond rings, all by Chopard.

'Grace of Monaco' actress Paz Vega accessorised her dreamy dress with a pair of fancy-cut white diamond drop earrings and a white diamond cocktail ring by Chopard.

Director Sofia Coppola - member of the 67th Annual Cannes International Film Festival Jury - dressed up her black dress with a white diamond line bracelet by Chopard.

The train on Chinese actress Ziyi Zhang's black and white dress by Rolland Haute Couture was one of the most daring of the day, which she paired with diamond chandelier earrings and diamond rings by Chopard, one of which she wore on her thumb.

Zoe Saldana paired her pretty Victoria Beckham dress with Catene earrings and an Onde ring, both in rose gold and diamonds, by De GRISOGONO.
