Dover Street Market, New York

Occupying a neoclassical building at 30th and Lexington, the New York iteration of Rei Kawakubo’s cult multibrand emporium spreads itself over seven floors and boasts even more curated treasures than its siblings. Like the London and Ginza outposts, Dover Street Market New York is a poetic cacophony of creative expressions. In addition to carrying the full Comme des Garçons range, it stocks a clashing mix of brands, ranging from niche favourites like Yang Li and Visvim to big names like Prada, Alexander Wang and Saint Laurent. The building, previously inhabited by Touro College, was empty for four years before Kawakubo got her hands on it. She gutted and redesigned the premises and installed a glass elevator that runs through the core of the boutique. Interspersed throughout the mammoth space are several specially commissioned artworks – from sound sculptures by Brooklyn artist Calx Vive to wall murals by Japanese artist Koichi Enomoto. The store's unusual location, on a road less travelled east of Midtown, not only makes perfect sense once the majestic building comes into view, but brings the allure of discovery to the beloved brand.
